The Poet Robert L. Frost

Today Robert Frost is a recognised American poet, worshipped in England and revered in many countries of the world. However, at the beginning, and even in the middle of his poetic career, Frost did not enjoy such wide acceptance.

The fate of the poet is unique: the first two decades of poetic activity he spent in complete obscurity, publishing on average one poem a year in local periodicals.

His first book Frost, being nearly forty years, published in England and immediately became famous in America. For decades his poems and he himself had been taken differently on both sides of the ocean. For the British it was late, maybe the last romantic while the Americans considered Frost a realist, loyal to the truth of life.

Throughout his life, Frost wrote both rhymed and blank verse. Rhymed works were usually small in size and traditional in form. The blank verse at times consisted of many hundreds of lines. It should be noted five or six rhymed verses of his made him worldwide famous, however, the real popularity of Frost is bound exclusively to all his blank verses. Frost's blank verse is written in the form of the dramatic monologue (sometimes dialogue), ascending to the English poet of the nineteenth century Robert Browning, who, in turn, was a Shakespeare’s follower. Sometimes Frost offers us a monologue of the author (lyrical hero), sometimes a character, sometimes a dialogue or serial monologues of several characters.

As noted above, Frost has been first acknowledged in England, where, driven to despair, he escaped from the current literary situation in America. In England, he continued to do the usual things: living on rural farms, growing potatoes and writing poetry. Soon, English readers were acquainted with the American poet and his two books of poems “A Boys Will” and “North of Boston”. It turned out that England, the country with more old and strong poetic traditions than America, was closer to the new poetic talent.

However, the Americans quickly recovered the situation and in 1915 the U.S. magazines were vying each other to publish Frost's poetry, naming him the national poet of America. American universities awarded Frost prestigious prizes and invited him to lecture about poetry. Until the last days Frost had not ceased his prolific poetry and lecturing activities, moreover, in the last decade of his life he took on a kind of mission of "cultural ambassador" of the U.S. in a number of countries.

Today Robert Frost is a recognised American poet, worshipped in England and revered in many countries of the world. However, at the beginning, and even in the middle of his poetic career, Frost did not enjoy such wide acceptance.
