Time Machine Essay

The Time Machine is a novel by H. G. Wells, his first major science fiction work. The novel was adapted from a story of 1888 Argonauts of Time and published in 1895. The Time Machine introduced the time travel idea and used the time machine in fiction, which was used by a variety of later writers.

The novel was published in the journal New Revue during January-May 1895, entitled The Time Traveler’s Tale. In May of the same year, the novel was published as a separate publication in England and the United States.

In his work, Wells described the journey of a man in time when science was still in the linear treatment of time, since the first discoveries of the relativity of time, mutual influence of chronos and topos date back to the beginning of the 20th century.

The novel brings the reader to the ninth millennium. The main character (time traveler) carries out flights into the future on a personally constructed time machine. He imagines the world of the future happy and joyful, but getting back on the earth, he sees a contradiction between those who work very hard (ape-like Morlocks), and those who live the fruits of their labor (fragile Eloi). Both have degraded. Every night, rising to the surface from underground, where they work in the mines, Morlocks drink the blood of Eloi, satisfying their hunger. Unlike other science fiction writers, adherents of technical progress, Wells didn’t predict bright and good future for the mankind. He came to pessimistic conclusions about the inevitable degeneration of the human species, the threat of exhaustion and doom of civilization in the world; he was focused on the need to change the imperfect world order, otherwise people would get degradation and destruction. Time traveler sees the utter demise of the once mighty civilization. Nothing of the descendants of the primitive earthlings is reminiscent of the thousand-year development of the species.

Despite the gloomy and black colors Wells used in his novel, describing the human future, he also resorts to the image of rather sentimental and pure love adventures of the Time Traveler. The novel ends with the tragic death of a cute defenseless women and the heroic victory of an intelligent and courageous scientist over the degenerate descendants, and his return to the modern world.

The novel The Time Machine brought first enormous success to Wells, opening the science fiction genre to the world, which was destined to become the most popular in the twentieth century.

The following novels of the writer were created in the same ideological theme and genre as well as stylistic direction.
