The Novel 1984 by George Orwell

In the dystopia 1984 by George Orwell, we saw that the author’s main opponent was totalitarianism. Orwell saw it as a threat of freedom and democracy, the highest human values. He considered himself a supporter of Democratic Socialism, which was based on freedom, social justice and respect for a man.

In this novel, the English writer has depicted a world society in the future – Oceania – as a totalitarian hierarchical system based on spiritual and physical enslavement of a man. The representatives of this society live in fear and hatred, ready to betray their friends or parents for the purpose of self-preservation. People do not live, but exist under the watchful supervision and control of a big brother. There were a lot of disputes on the image of a big brother and it is difficult to say whether Orwell himself would have agreed to give his big brother a physical resemblance to Stalin like the creators of the movie that came in 1989 did.

In the novel George Orwell portrays a system, according to the logic of which, a person must be turned into nothing. To do this, there is a strong state apparatus of a comprehensive human suppression, which consists of the truth ministries (minitrue), peace (minipax), love (miniluv) and abundance (miniplenty). Also there is a Thought Police, identifying anyone who might compromise the Party’s régime; telescreens it is impossible to hide from and conceal even the slightest change in facial expression; Time of Hatred, designed to bring love to the big brother and hatred to the enemies of the system, such as Emmanuel Goldstein.

There are almost no novels in literature with imagery that would influence the public so much as the one in 1984 by George Orwell. Big Brother is watching you, Room 101, thoughtcrime – these are literary images that are known even to those who have not read the novel and watched the movie.

The novel depicts a new world and a new life: transparent walls in homes, so one can see what people are doing; monitors everywhere, through which the stream of information about the overall victory of Oceania and the destruction of the hated enemies flows; Big Brother, which no one has ever seen, but who sees, hears, and feels you; stamps for sexual life; strange disappearances of people, who seem to be here yesterday, but suddenly it turns out that they have never existed; history that is daily rewritten depending on the needs of the power.

Orwell’s pessimism, which seems to be the base of his works, at the deeper reading of the text becomes an uncompromising optimism. He wrote not to scare people, but because he believed in man’s ability to preserve own humanity.
