Struggles of Jane Eyre

The power of a female gets its outburst via the lines of legendary Jane Eyre, a personage very fantastically caricatured by Charlotte Bronte.

The novel by Bronte illustrates Jane’s struggle to make her voice heard and also to express the truth of her own unique experience. Bronte has just depicted her own quest for identity via the character of Jane Eyre. The given novel should be regarded as a feminist study. It has nothing common with Dombey and Son and Mary Barton, and Vanity Fair. It’s both in purposes and effect firstly a novel of the inner life, not of a person in his social relations. The novel maps a private world. Just like many females in her time, Jane Eyre is economically devalued and also socially marginalized, mostly because of her gender, though also due to the lack of an independent source of wealth.

The story of Jane Eyre is a vivid, emotional reality of oppression and struggle for identity. That’s a typical example of the toughest reality ever faced by many Victorian women. Jane Eyre doesn’t expose the evils of society, though concerns itself with a world apart. As readers, we’ve got an excellent opportunity to explore a world of imagination and feeling of the most passionate kind. In his work Fire and Eyre, David Lodge tells about the theme of Jane Eyre. As he states, that’s the struggle of an individual consciousness towards self-fulfillment as well as the romantic imagery of seascape, landscape, moon, sun and the elements, via which the theme is expressed. The scenic beauty greatly contributes to the inner beauty of the female character, illustrating her attempt to fly like a bird in a free sky, far away from the male dominated society.

In the novel, the title character is locked in an everlasting struggle to find her place in the world and also establish herself as an empowered personality. Jane’s psychological, emotional, moral and intellectual growth, her awareness of her own faculties, not to mention challenging circumstances bring out her inner strength. Her journey starts in her girlhood as the orphaned ward of her aunt. Jane’s a disempowered character. We can also add that she’s a sort of Cinderella figure in a hostile environment. Jane daydreams herself away to the barren climes reachable by the subjects of the books in Bewick’s History of British Birds. She managed to grasp the only kind of power, which is knowledge. Jane’s everlasting quest for power and identity as well as the symbol of the working class woman has started to discover from a young age.
