Important Characters in Everyday Use by Alice Walker

Everyday Use is a popular short story written by Alice Walker, and its plot revolves around one African-American mother and her daughters. The entire story started when one of them (Dee) comes back home to visit the rest of her family. When readers are introduced to the main characters involved in this book, it becomes evident that sisters are quite different (the other one is called Maggie).

For example, Maggie is described as an ignorant and homely girl, while Dee seems to be a well-educated and attractive woman. The main plot goes beyond such differences, and it deals mainly with how both sisters value their important heritage. Maggie doesn’t know anything else, except her heritage, as she has never left her own home. On the contrary, Dee is not concerned about her roots a lot. Her outward appearance of a proud African-American woman is contrasted with her words and actions that show her personal shame and ignorance of her culture.

The author uses a range of characteristics of Dee to show that any heritage is something that people need to have inside of them, and it can’t be found in any material objects. The narrator of the whole story is mother who does her best to explain the backgrounds and personality of Dee. The latter one seems to run from her poverty and she is obviously detached from her family members. That’s because she tried to separate herself from her relatives as soon as she got old enough.

Dee decides to leave her hometown to attend a college and search for a better life. When she moves out, she assures her mother that she will always come to see her, regardless of her new life and its obstacles. However, Dee doesn’t want to bring any friends because she founds it quite embarrassing to show them her true heritage. Her mother is a strong and big boned woman with a mild character. She easily earns the respect of all readers from the very beginning because she is loving and forgiving.

Maggie is described as an innocent and deferential young woman who is always under the shadow of her older sister Dee with her garish, loud, and judgmental personality. The main problem of the Dee is that she considered her heritage only as some artifact, not her real way of living. Finally, she also has a Muslim boyfriend, a short and stocky man with long hair who helps Dee legitimize her personal identity. All of these characters are important for the main plot.
