The Life of Alexander Pope

Alexandre Pope was born in London in 1688 in the family of an average linen-draper. His entire family had their Catholic faith, and it forced him to attend the university where this talented man learned Latin and Greek under the guidance of local priests and he also attended the Catholic school. Then his family relocated and he decided to stick to the regime of self-education after completing the formal one.

Pope spent a lot of time on translations, studies, and reading to force himself to teach different languages via the act of translating. When he was only 16 years old, he wrote Pastorals, his first prominent literary piece. At that time, he contracted tuberculosis that weakened his spine, had a bad impact on his growth, and damaged his overall health permanently. When Pope got better, he decided to travel to London to learn such languages as Italian and French.

This is where he managed to make a number of excellent literary acquaintances, and they helped Alexander shape his future career in this field. He started to publish his literary works at that time and his early writing career wasn’t limited only to poetic matters. The publication of the story called The Rape of the Lock marked his success and recognition in this field. Once becoming a famous poet, Pope decided to work on a few projects at once.

For example, he wrote his own translations of The Odyssey and The Iliad, but this work took about 6 years. Both of these prominent works established his fortune and fame because of their immense popularity. Pope also produced his edition of many Shakespeare’s works. Pope had to behave carefully because of the Jacobite rebellion because many of his friends were put to prisons. As a poet, he discussed many important subjects, including his criticizing of bad writers, metaphysics, philosophy, etc.

In summary, the main thing that differentiates Alexander Pope from other accomplished writers of that time is his breadth. Unlike many other authors who were known in the 18th century, including Defoe, Swift, Gay, Richardson, and others, Pope seemed to have reinvented his unique literary style on a regular basis, and this is what attracted the attention of the audience to his works. Despite his widely known reputation as a satirist, he was interested in different genres, from rural to pastorals. His literary works deserve being read by people nowadays.
