Jay Gatsby's Living the American Dream

Many readers are familiar with The Great Gatsby because it’s one of the best literary works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Basically, its plot is about pursuing the American Dream and the downfall of people who try to achieve their illusionary goals. For different people, this dream has different meanings and roles, but when it comes to Jay Gatsby, his American Dream is the idea that he can become happy through power and wealth.

To be happy, this character reaches into his past to relive his old dream, but he requires power and wealth to make this dream come true. Jay Gatsby is the main character in this famous book, and he keeps longing for the past, which is his huge mistake. The biggest surprise for most readers is that he spends most of his life on recapturing this dream and its pursuit. This means that he is literally living his American Dream.

In the past, Jay had a romance with a beautiful girl named Daisy, but he understood that he couldn’t marry her due to existing differences in social classes. That’s why he decided to leave her to become wealthy and powerful while reaching her social and financial standards. However, once Gatsby becomes rich, he relocates to live near Daisy who is already married and has a daughter.

He keeps throwing incredible parties because he hopes to see her one day, but he doesn’t want to attend his own parties. When his hopes turn out to be false, Jay starts asking his guests if anyone knows Daisy, This is how he meets another important character Nick Caraway, her cousin who agrees to arrange their meeting. The personal dream of Jay Gatsby symbolizes the large American Dream where all people have their available opportunities to get everything they want. Even in the end, he still believes that Daisy loves him because he keeps protecting her, but he is wrong.

In summary, Jay was just a poor boy who managed to become a very rich person by living his American Dream. He has a lot of money, but he fails to win with battle in the end. From early years, Gatsby has loved Daisy, but we didn’t succeed to be with her. This character also had other goals in his life, including his dreams to become very successful, but his plans were not fulfilled. Jay thinks that it’s enough for him to have Daisy in his life to be fully happy, but this dream is not meant to come true, so he finishes his life in a bad way while still hoping for something good to happen because Daisy leaves him and he is dead.
