Fishing and the Striped Bass Population

One of the most important problems of the world ocean is overfishing. Experts have suggested that the way to remedy the situation is the displacement of food priorities with seafood and fish of a low value.

Excessive fishing is practiced in many countries and is by far the main reason for the massive decline of populations of many species of fish; some of them are already on the brink of extinction. According to the report prepared by the World Conservation Union, 7.5% of the total number of fish in Europe is under threat of extinction. At the same time 58 of the 59 species in this list are exclusively because of overfishing.

The economic reason of the problem is the growing demand coming after the increase in the number of people on the planet. Advanced fishing techniques (digital maps, satellite navigation, and three-dimensional sonar systems) are the technological reasons of the problem. In the open sea, modern tools can easily detect large shoals of fish, allowing them to complete the catch.

Special quotas accepted in many countries do not help in improving the situation, but sometimes they even increase the proportion of the fish caught, since the fishermen do not stop until they exhaust the permitted limits. In the Third World, due to the absence of control on the state level, the poaching is flourishing.

The population of a striped bass has significantly declined because of overfishing. Striped bass is a maritime anadromous fish. The natural area of habitation is the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North America from the mouth of the St. Lawrence River to Louisiana. Although this fish is considered to be marine Striped Bass enters rivers to spawn and survive without problems even in closed fresh water. Due to such a high adaptability of the species, as well as its attractiveness as an object of sport fishing striped bass, not without human intervention, has created a large population in the waters of the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of North America, as well as in some large fresh waters. But die to its attractiveness to the fishermen, the population of striped bass has significantly decreased in recent years.

In order to preserve the population of striped bass, special government branches are trying to stop fishing seasons and short the quotas. According to modern regulations, fishermen are allowed to take two fish per person per day or five fish per boat.

The population of striped bass depends on overfishing, quotas, and poaching.
