Problematic Marriage in Much Ado About Nothing

Much Ado About Nothing happens to be a comedic play by William Shakespeare supposed to have been written in 1598 and 1599, when Shakespeare was approaching the middle of his career. The given play was included in the First Folio, released in 1623.Much Ado About Nothing is mostly considered one of the writer’s best comedies ever written by him. It’s because it successfully combines elements of robust hilarity with more serious meditations on shame, honor and court politics.

Via noting Benedick and Beatrice get tricked into confessing their love for each other, while Claudio is tricked into rejecting Hero at the altar on the absurd belief that she hasn’t been faithful. At the end, Benedick and Beatrice have to join forces for the purpose of setting things in the proper way, and the others join in a dance when celebrating the marriages of the two couples.

Beatrice and Benedick quickly became the major interest of the play, exactly to the point where they are currently considered the key roles of the play, even though their relationship is given lesser or equal weight in the script than Claudio and Hero's situation. Beside the title of the play, Charles II also wrote 'Benedick and Beatrice' in his copy of the Second Folio. The provocative treatment of gender appears t to be the cornerstone of the play and it needs to be considered in its Renaissance context. While it was reflected and also emphasized in some plays of that period, it was also challenged.

Amussen draws attention to the fact that the destabilizing of traditional gender clichés turn to have inflamed anxieties regarding the erosion of social order. It feels like that comic drama could be an effective means of calming such anxieties. Obviously, we can see through the play's popularity that it only bolstered folks’ interest in such behavior. Benedick gives voice to male anxieties regarding females’ steep tongues as well as proneness to sexual lightness. In the patriarchal society of the play, the males’ loyalties were mostly governed by conventional codes of honor as well as camaraderie, to say nothing of a sense of superiority to women. Assumptions that females are extremely prone to inconstancy by nature are shown in the repeated jokes on cuckoldry and they partly explain Claudio's willingness to to believe the slander against Hero. The given stereotype is turned on its head in Balthasar's song, that shows men to be the deceitful as well as inconstant sex that females must suffer.
