Hunter Thompson’s Early Childhood

Hunter Thompson is American writer and journalist, founder of gonzo journalism, best known as the author of the novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Thompson was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He grew up in the vicinity of Cherokee Triangle and attended Louisville High School for Boys. His parents, Jack (died in 1952) and Virginia (died in 1999) married in 1935. After death, Jack left three sons – Hunter (who at the time was 14 years old), James, and Davison – for the education of their mother, who after her husband’s death was an alcoholic binge.

In 1956, Hunter was forced to actually escape in the US Army before the compulsory military draft, as he crashed the truck of his employer. After working in the Information Service Department at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida in 1956, he became the sports editor of his own the newspaper The Main Courier.

In 1958, Thompson’s commander recommended him for an early dismissal from the Air Force with the rank of Airman First Class. After the Air Force, he moved to New York and studied at Columbia University, where he attended the Faculty of general subjects, such as lectures on writing short stories.

During this time, he worked for some time in the magazine The Time and earned $51 a week. During the work he reprinted The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, explaining that he wanted to learn the writing style of the authors. In 1959, Thompson was fired from The Time for insubordination.

In 1960, Thompson moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico after accepting a job offer in the sports magazine El Sportivo, which closed shortly. The move to Puerto Rico allowed Thompson to make a trip to the Caribbean and South America, and write freelance articles for several US dailies.

In 1961, Thompson wrote two novels The Prince of Medusa and The Rum Diary and offered publishers a few stories.

On May 9, 1963 he married his longtime girlfriend Sandra Conklin. In 1964, they had a son Juan Fitzgerald Thompson. After 17 years of marriage, Hunter and Sandy divorced in 1980, remaining close friends until Hunter’s death.

Thompson was fond of firearms and was a desperate enthusiast with a large collection of various arms.

Thompson died at his home in Woody Creek, Colorado, on February 20, 2005 from a gunshot wound to the head. He was 67 years old.
