Similarities of Neglectful and Abusive Families

Child abuse is not only about physically hurting. Such visible injuries like broken bones are obvious signals of a child being a victim of abuse, but there are also other types of abuse, including neglect and emotional abuse that can be devastated to a child’s emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Some types of abuse are not that easy to recognize, but learning the similarities in behavior of parents who tend to abuse is the way to help suffering children.

One of the most common tactics of abusive parents is an emotional abuse of their child. The following are examples of emotional child abuse:

  • Constantly shaming, belittling, and humiliating the child;
  • Making negative comparisons to others or calling names;
  • Telling the child that he/she is “worthless,” “no good,” “bad,” or a “mistake;”
  • Frequent threatening, yelling, or bullying;
  • Rejecting or ignoring the child or giving him/her the silent treatment;
  • Limited physical contact;
  • No kisses, hugs, etc.;

Exposing the child to the abuse of others or violence.

One of the forms of child abuse is an inadequate physical punishment. Abusive parents can use methods that are inappropriate for the child’s physical condition or age. It is important to support discipline, but no fear should be caused.

There are criteria that help to differentiate abusive parents, including the following:

The child cannot predict the reaction of his parents, which means that he does not know what behavior or action triggers the physical punishment;

Abusive parents tend to act out of anger, which has nothing in common with disciplining the child.

Neglect is another type of child abuse. Abusive parents do not want to provide the child with his/her basic emotional and physical needs, including food, shelter, clothing, or taking care of the personal hygiene.

Isolation is also a form of abuse. Some parents do not understand that socializing is important to their child. Such parents may isolate their children from others.

The following signs may help recognized sexual abuse of a child:

  • Nightmares;
  • Sleep problems;
  • Sudden mood swings,
  • Loss of appetite;
  • Problems sitting or walking;
  • Feeling discomfort when changing clothes;
  • Hostility and tension to anyone who approaches them.

Each type of abuse may negatively impact on the future child’s life, and that is why recognizing child abuse is so important.

Child abuse is not only about physically hurting. Such visible injuries like broken bones are obvious signals of a child being a victim of abuse, but there are also other types of abuse, including neglect and emotional abuse that can be devastated to a child’s emotional, mental, and physical well-being.
