The Modern Turner's Rain, Steam and Speed

Turner is a famous name when it comes to arts, and many people believe that he out-performed many former prodigies. The key reason is that he made his picture with real rain, sunshine, and rainbow. Then viewers can see a real train that comes down upon them, and it moves at the speed of 50 miles per 1 hour, and it’s best to see it to get a clearer understanding of this famous picture. Basically, the manner for which Speed is done is a great positive factor because it involves a steam coach that goes 50 miles per 1 hour.

It’s true that the world hasn’t seen anything like this well-known and original picture before. Actually, there is a Thackeray response to Turner's Rain, Steam and Speed after seeing it in 1844. A big canvas displayed in the honorable place in the exhibition because it was important and provocative at that time in terms of modern technology in general and the steam locomotive. Besides, the Great Western Railway inspired this picture and it was featured so prominently in its title.

This painting was also significant because it was the first time for this subject matter to be taken on a large scape and to be displayed in public, although it wasn’t the first time for railways to be depicted in artworks. Gerald Finley and Ian Carter assert that this artwork still remains quite engaging and contains many layers of meaning that haven’t been brought to the light, despite the criticism written about this complex work.

Rain, Steam and Speed by Turner can be read as the celebration of innovative technologies and the new Britain that was just forming in its wake. Moreover, it was a lament for the passing golden age, or a certain combination of two ages in addition to the loss and progress, as Carter suggests. To give a more precise characteristic, this painting is all about the casualties involved in progress and the impossibility to avoid changes.

In conclusion, this painting represents the visual metaphor that depicts the dialectic between stasis and changes, old and new, and introduced the audience to this vision. This perspective was used as a starting point, but there are other themes that can be explored when viewing this famous picture. Certain issues also surround this evocating artwork, so they shouldn’t be overlooked. The British public responded to the advanced made in sciences in a positive way, and it accepted this painting warmly too.
