There Are No Children Here by Alex Kotlowitz

Alex Kotlowitz, a journalist, writer and producer, is the author of three books, including "There Are No Children Here ", which was recognized by the New York public library as one of 150 most remarkable books of the 20th century.

Kotlowitz’s story describes the present-day generation of American youth that has seen more crimes, cruelty and violence than the previous generations. Their happy childhood, innocence, and freedom were stolen. The words of one of the boys help us understand the depth of the problem. He said that if he grew up, he would become a bus driver. Shocking is the word "if", as the main concern of the boy is survival and a remote chance for the decent life and good future.

With the luxury of the rich districts of the American cities, people often do not notice or are not willing to see the slums and poverty around. It is the deplorable fact, that there are still places where people are endlessly struggling for survival. Kotlowitz describes one of the hopeless areas, under the name of Henry Horner Homes. This housing project is funded by the Chicago authorities; however, the support is so miserable that people have to live in terrible conditions. Their homes that have not been repaired for years have no heating. Rotting garbage is everywhere as the area is not served by the public utility. Moreover, people have to live in the terrible crime situation with everyday robberies and murders. There is no infrastructure, no libraries, sports clubs, banks; people are doomed to poverty and unemployment.

Under such conditions, most people start to drink and commit crimes. So with the family of two black boys, Lafayette and Pharoah, doomed to survival. The tragedy of this situation is that people got adjusted to the hopelessness. Having accepted it, they dropped to the lowest level of their needs. The boys have to face violence and injustice of local gangs, knowing pretty well that they might not live until the next day. Throughout the story, fearing death hourly, children have experienced criminal record, drugs, humiliation at school.

Kotlowitz does not offer the reader a happy ending. Children continue living in slums, but more importantly, they are alive. Still, the best thing is that Pharoah is striving to enter high school. He is almost certain that this is the only way to a better life. The phantasm of a hope for a higher quality life is the major message by Kotlowitz. However, in the big scheme of things, he wanted to remind people that if they look about they will see the same boys as Lafayette and Pharoah living very close to their safe and cosy homes.

Not really across legal concepts, needed rewriting but a start for me to go from. Did not read the instructions and if read would have been fine.
