Darkness in Macbeth

Macbeth is one of the most famous works of English literature. The tragedy is full of various symbols, imagery, and allegory. Probably one of the most prominent symbols is light and darkness.

Darkness shows that something bad is about to happen, while light is associated with life and God.

From the first act, the cover of night is mentioned whenever something terrible is about to happen. Lady Macbeth, for example, asks thick night to come with the smoke of hell, so her knife won’t see how it makes the wound in the King who is peacefully asleep. The literal darkness is related to the evil or dark action she is going to commit.

She then calls for the murderous spirits to avert heaven from looking through the blanket of the dark to cry. She means that light (it refers here to God, heaven, and goodness) provides protection from evil and is the only thing that could stop her from killing Duncan. When Lady Macbeth starts to go crazy she always asks for a candle to be put next to her. She thinks that light will defend her from evil forces she ordered to come, but the light doesn’t save her.

When Macbeth learns about Lady Macbeth’s suicide he proclaims for the brief candle to be out, which means the candle’s flame is a metaphor for Lady Macbeth’s short life and her sudden death. Similarly, Banquo’s torchlight (the one that illuminates him enough so his murderers can see what they’re doing) is also out the moment he is killed. Both of these incidents remind an event from the night King Duncan was killed – Lennox says that the fire in the King’s chimney was mysteriously blown out.

Dark and evil predictions in the tragedy are not just play an important role – in fact they determine the development of the plot.

Macbeth and Banquo, generals of the Scottish King Duncan, met on their way the three witches. Images of them are fantastic. They are neither women, nor men. They could have looked like women if they didn’t have beards. Shakespeare gives them attributes that according to medieval legends are mandatory for the evil witches. The appearance of witches is connected with such important signs as the cat’s meow, the croaking of the frogs, darkness and night, and potions of evil ingredients. Shakespeare depicted the typical image of witches that one can meet at night. However grotesque outfit of midnight black witches masks powerful and menacing ancient goddesses of fate, who in Greek mythology are referred to as Moirai.

Shakespeare introduces the motif of the double prediction – Macbeth’s fate and the fate of Banquo. Promises that witches give them have certain similarities, but the reaction of Macbeth and Banquo is very different.
