An Eating Disorder Called Anorexia

Anorexia is the lack of appetite, a complete or partial refusal from food, leading to weight loss and the emergence of many opportunistic diseases (somatic, endocrine, cancer, neurological, and psychiatric).

Patients lose weight rapidly; they experience nausea, vomiting, and after a bit of food feel like after overeating.

This term also applies to the nervous system disease – anorexia nervosa. This disease occurs when a patient stimulates their own weight loss, giving up food. At the same time, in spite of the exhaustion, people will not complain about the danger signs, as they believes in being fat. Most often young girls and women suffer from the disease, trying hard to lose weight. At the same time they do not lose their appetite, but refuse to eat normally due to fear of getting extra kilograms.

Circle of diseases, which may be the causes of anorexia, is very wide. Among them – diabetes, hyperthyroidism, drug addiction, alcoholism, anemia, various infections, intoxication, depression, anxiety phobia, hormonal and immunological disorders, and so on.

In recent years, anorexia nervosa became widespread among patients who suffer from anxiety disorders of the psyche. When anorexia is becoming clinical, body weight rapidly decreases, menstrual cycle and absorption of food are violated, gastritis and enterocolitis are developed. When having anorexia nervosa patients think that they are prone to obesity. Also there are signs of dissatisfaction with oneself and one’s physical form. Thus, patients exhaust themselves with hunger, hard dieting and excessive exercises, and body weight is rapidly reduced.

The main symptoms of anorexia are loss of appetite and significant weight loss (more than 15% of normal). The disease is also expressed by menstrual irregularities (for women), amenorrhea, weakness, sleep disturbances, potency (for men), arrhythmia, and muscle spasms. When suffering from anorexia nervosa, patients constantly feel that they are too fat; self-esteem is significantly understated, depending on weight.

If you do not deal with the treatment of anorexia, the patient can get to the cachectic stage (degeneration of the internal organs), which leads to death.

Treatment of anorexia should be complex. First, the medical condition of the patient should be improved. A patient is in need of behavioral and cognitive psychotherapy. Serious measures to restore body weight should be taken.

Psychotherapy is required for the patient so that he or she could leave negative thoughts, learn to accept their own body as it is, and change their behavior. Sometimes, antidepressants are used for the treatment of anorexia.
