The Main Goals of the Human Genome Project

The Human Genome Project was an international research project, which main objective was to determine the sequence of nucleotides that make up DNA and identify 20-25 thousand genes in the human genome.

The project began in 1990, under the direction of James Watson and under the auspices of the US National Health Organization. In 2000, a working draft of the genome was released, the complete genome was out in 2003, but even today, an additional analysis of some areas is not over yet. The bulk of the sequencing was carried out in universities and research centers in the US, Canada, and UK. Apart from the obvious fundamental importance, determining the structure of human genes is an important step for the development of new drugs and other aspects of health.

Although the aim of the project of deciphering the human genome is to understand the structure of the genome of the human species, the project also focused on several other organisms, such as bacteria, in particular, Escherichia coli, insects such as the fly Drosophila, and mammals, such as a mouse.

It was originally planned to define the sequencing of more than three billion nucleotides, contained in the haploid human genome. Then, several groups have announced an effort to extend the program to sequencing the diploid human genome.

Genome of any single organism (except for identical twins and cloned animals) is unique, thus the definition of the human genome sequence should include sequencing and numerous variations of each gene.

Another goal of the project is the study of ethical, legal, and social implications of genome decoding. It is important to examine these questions and to find the most appropriate solutions before they become a breeding ground for disputes and political problems.

All people have to some extent unique genomic sequences. Therefore, the data published by the project do not contain the exact sequence of genomes of each individual. This is a combined genome of a small number of anonymous donors. The resulting genomic sequence is the basis for future work on the identification of differences between individuals.

Almost all of the goals set by the project have been achieved more quickly than it was anticipated. The project has set an achievable goal of sequencing 95% of DNA. Researchers have not only reached it, but also surpassed their own predictions, sequencing 99.99% of the human DNA. The project not only surpassed all goals and standards, but also continues to improve the results that have been already achieved.
