An Overview of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is a lush tropical country, situated on the west coast of Africa. This part of the world boasts wonderful beaches, picturesque mountains as well as some of the richest natural resources and also mineral deposits in the world. Yes, it’s stuffed with diamonds. Nevertheless, it’s also considered to be the poorest country on this planet, with enormous inequality in income distribution. The Human Development Index ranks this country lowest in the world when estimating its employment, income, education and healthcare. In terms of infant mortality, HIV and malaria Sierra Leone has no rivals in the world.

Coupled with this overwhelming poverty as well as hopelessness, from 1991–2001 this African country appeared to be center stage to a terrible ten-year rebel war in which tens of thousands of humans were killed and approximately one million were forced from their homes. Many of them were tortured, raped and conscripted into rebel forces. The war destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure and left indelible scars, especially on kids, leaving more than 340,000 children orphaned.

Approximately 90% of the country’s population descends from the numerous ethnic groups native to Africa, Mende, being the largest, with its 30% of the population. As for the remaining 10%, these are descendants of freed slaves dubbed Krios from the West Indies and American, who came to Sierra Leone in the late 1700s.

While English happens to be the official language of Sierra Leone, only a relatively small minority can speak it. Krio, a derivative of the English language, was introduced to this African country by the Krios centuries ago and it continues to be the common means of communication throughout the country today.

In spite of the fact approximately 99% of the Krio population turn to be followers of Christianity, just 30% of the population of Sierra Leone consider themselves Christians. The vast majority of them or to be exact up to 60% are followers of Islam. About 10% hold to African indigenous religions.

In Sierra Leone, a typical family often consists of a widow caring for a flock of kids.

Most of the population of this African country lives in rural farming communities. In Sierra Leone, a typical family dwelling is a mud hut. It features a dirt floor as well as a thatched roof. Cooking is carried out by outdoor fire. As for washing, laundry, and bathing, they’re done in the nearest river or with water taken from the closest water source.
