Space Shuttle Columbia

Columbia was a space shuttle of NASA, and the first example of the system ship Space Shuttle to fly in space. Construction of the Columbia was launched on March 27, 1975, and on March 24, 1979, Columbia was transferred to NASA.

The shuttle was named after the sailboat on which Captain Robert Gray in May 1792 investigated the inland waters of British Columbia (now the US states of Washington and Oregon). The name also was intended to perpetuate the name of the command module of Apollo 11 spacecraft, which in turn was named after the statue, crowning the US Congress building.

The first manned flight of Space Shuttle Columbia STS-1 happened on April 12, 1981 (up to this moment NASA had not been sending astronauts to orbit for 6 years). John Young, a veteran of the US space, was the commander of the crew, Robert Crippen was the pilot, who had not been to the orbit before The flight was (and still is) unique: it was the very first, in fact, test launch of the spacecraft, conducted with the crew on board (the reason was that the shuttle could not land without drivers due to insufficiently developed automation).

During the flight of Columbia STS-9, a crew of 6 astronauts was for the first time on board. Ulf Merbold (Germany) was among these six astronauts, who was the first foreigner on the American spaceship.

Eileen Collins was the commander of the Columbia (STS-93), the first woman commander of the American spacecraft.

Space Shuttle Columbia was wrecked on February 1, 2003 (flight STS-107) when entering the Earth’s atmosphere before landing. It was the 28th space travel of Columbia.

Hills on Pluto are called in the honor of space shuttle Columbia.

On the morning of February 1, 2003 after a 16-day flight, the shuttle was returning to Earth. NASA lost contact with the ship 16 minutes before the expected landing at John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Eyewitnesses photographed the burning wreckage of the shuttle, flying at an altitude of about 63 kilometers. All seven crew members were killed.

Within a few months after the tragedy, NASA scientists were looking for the causes of the disaster. They came to the conclusion that it resulted in the destruction of the outer heat-shielding layer on the left wing of the plane of the shuttle, due to a fall of a piece of insulation of oxygen tank. Hot gases penetrated inside, leading to overheating of the left landing gear pneumatics, its exposure, further destruction of the wing structure, and wreck of the shuttle.

All found wreckage of the shuttle is now stored in the Space Center of John F. Kennedy.
