Moon on the Water by Y. Kawabata

Yasunari Kawabata is Japanese writer, officer of the French Order of Arts and Letters (1960), and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1968).

In Kawabata’s works that are deeply rooted in the national artistic traditions of Japan, while freely use the techniques of modern literature, great importance is given to the subtext, innuendo, and suggestiveness. His major writings include the novels Thousand Cranes, Snow Country, The Old Capital, The Sound of the Mountain, and others. Kawabata himself considered his key work, the novel The Master of Go. The writer’s works have been translated into many languages.

Kawabata died at his home in Zushi in 1972 due to carbon monoxide poisoning. One of the versions is a suicide, the other is an accident as a result of intoxication, but the actual cause of death still remains unclear.

One of Kawabata’s short stories Moon on the Water deserves special attention. In the short story Moon on the Water, the main character is a woman named Kyoko. She has to take care of her husband almost all her life.

After her first husband died, she keeps on being obsessed with the mirror. Once Kyoko’s second husband tells her that a sound love can only dwell in a sound person. He tells her that because he sees she is very unhappy and love can’t dwell in an unhappy person.

The names of both of Kyoko’s husbands are never mentioned in the story shows that her life is lonely and isolated. After the death of her husband, her life was filled with the sadness and the mirror symbolizes her escape from this. Her mirror gives her a sense of adventure, and she could actually go to a new world with no worries. She could leave everything behind without worrying about anything.

The advice of her second husband is very valuable. She is very lonely even being married to the second husband, and she needs to get some help. She is not crazy, but she needs help. Instead of being obsessed with her husband or any other person, she is obsessed with a mirror. She can’t love anyone or be happy in her marriage when she is so miserable.

The whole story can be linked to the title Moon on the Water, which means the theme of reflection and her husband’s advice. The advice of her husband is like the Moon that reflects on everything. If you’re happy you can love and be content with your life.
