Great Expectations is a brilliant novel by Dickens

The story was written in 1860 during the Victorian era that lasted from the coronation in 1837 until her death in 1901. The specificity of Mid-Victorian England is very important. At that time, such things as integrity, respectability and a sense of public duty really made a difference. The period of the novel was a time of modification. The economy was changing. England was on its way to become a wealthy world power. However, people was still living in horrible conditions and children had to work for twelve hours a day. Many critics say that Great Expectations is the greatest Charles Dickens’ novel. It is much more complicated than his other novels but at the same time it is quiet easy to read. The novel was brilliantly written and there are a lot of fantastic scenes and well-written characters. By the way, Dickens wanted to please his readers and changed the ending of the novel to a happy one. The different ending has become one of the most debatable points for critics and readers. However, the happy ending brought Dickens a big success. The locations of the story are mostly in London. Dickens lived in London for years and knew all back streets and markets in this city. Great Expectations tells us the story of Pip. Pip is an orphan who follows on his way to wealth. During this way, he treats his friends and becomes too arrogant. Dickens skilfully shows how money can change people and create class distinctions. Pip dreams of easy money and wealthy life. An attack of brain fever that sends him into a deathlike coma late in the novel shows us his rebirth. Magwitch helps him to comprehend the significance of humility and Joe Gargery helps him with his health. In the first half of Great Expectations, there are a lot of great portraits of hopelessness and anxiety of childhood. Now we can say that Dickens adapted a few motifs from folklore. In portraits of Estella, Magwitch and Miss Havisham, we can divine wonderful princess, horrible ogre and fairy godmother. Dickens brilliantly shows social injustice in his novel and snobbery is one of the most important aspects of that injustice. Author shows that Joe Gargery and his kind human nature deserves his approval. At the same time, he censures love of money. Great Expectations is a touching novel about broken dreams and illusions. Dickens tells a story of a young man and his difficult way from the country to the city. During that way, Pip changed and lost his innocence.
