Othello the Tragic Hero

Many readers and critics agree that Othello has the necessary qualities of being a tragic hero. They think that he is a perfect tragic hero created by William Shakespeare in his famous play. From the very beginning, this character also has all the important traits of a protagonist. Othello starts with high ranks because he is a general of the army and has a prime position because of its power.

Besides, Othello’s exceptional merit is recognized by other characters involved, even Iago, and his personal achievements in war cases makes him be respected and admired by the audience. Although Iago keeps talking behind his back, he still respects Othello as being a leading general. He is in a prosperous and happy situation after getting married to Desdemona and his promotion to Cyprus. However, he is quite vulnerable to Iago, and readers can see how Iago starts taking control over Othello at the very beginning of this famous play, thus making him more prone to make mistakes.

It’s true that Othello has all the traits of a tragic hero in addition to his tragic flaws. As this popular play progresses, people understand that he has the quality of being gullible because he keeps trusting everything Iago tells him without any doubt. This means that he lacks clear judgements, and this is what makes Othello an easy target for Iago. Moreover, this character experiences a lot of inner turmoil and struggles to overcome his endless doubts, scruples, and desires.

He is also alienated in this play in a number of ways. For example, his color and race result in others calling him The Moor. As this play progresses, Othello becomes more alone. William Shakespeare developed this famous character into a fully-realized human being with his own name, opinions, personality, and so on. Othello is a perfect combination of both weakness and greatness who has such positive qualities as intelligence, courage, commanding skills, respect, etc.

However, he also has a few tragic flaws that result in his downfall in the end. The most important one is his jealousy in addition to Othello’s insecurities and poor judgement. His trust in the wrong person and mistrusting loyal characters lead to his failure. The author uses these characteristics as the main causes that resulted in Othello ending up as a tragic hero. His example should be viewed by all readers to avoid repeating the same mistakes in their real lives.
