Your Analysis of Two Kinds

Two Kinds is one of the stories that belong to the 2nd segment of The Joy Luck Club, a very popular debut book written by Amy Tan. Basically, the whole book is divided into 4 interconnected segments, and each one contains a number of stories that can stand alone. The main intention of the author was making this book a short-story collection, this literary piece is seen by many critics as a novel because of its cohesive and interrelated narratives.

Just like other stories in this collection, Two Kinds depicts different complexities in relationships between mothers and daughters in China Town (San Francisco). The main focus on this story is the inevitable and disruptive distance between those mothers who were born in China before its well-known communist revolution because they were cut off from their traditional cultures for many years and their daughters who were born in America and need to negotiate the burdens of their American expectations for personal success and Chinese ancestry.

The main narrator and protagonist of this story is called Jing-mei and she often thwarts the aspirations of her mother to make her a musical genius. Only after a long time, she will understand the underlying motifs of her own mother. This story is targeted at the key problems of community and identity in the US of that time. The author explores this relevant and sensitive aspect of this incredible nation by using quite sophisticated literary tools without compromising the readability of the whole book.

At its basic roots is the interpersonal dissonance that mass immigration trends create. Amy Tan creates the romantic concept of the lost ethnic sense and different cultural origins to reconfigure and undermine the motion of people’s ethnic essence. Relationships between mothers and their daughters symbolize connections between native inhabitants and foreigners.

In conclusion, the narrative of Jing-mei keeps alive the memories of the past and creates the community. This novel has its unique version of ethnicity and femininity offered to the wider narrative. There are different aspects of the lives of immigrants presented in this story, including the emphasis on losing a separation from mothers. The aspirations of her mother are obvious if to consider her traditional beliefs that the US is the land of excellent opportunities available to her daughter.

Two Kinds is one of the stories that belong to the 2nd segment of The Joy Luck Club, a very popular debut book written by Amy Tan. Basically, the whole book is divided into 4 interconnected segments, and each one contains a number of stories that can stand alone.
