The Masterpiece of Frankenstein

Today, everybody knows that Frankenstein is the monster, collected from different parts of the bodies of people and reanimated with the use of lightning and electricity by its creator, Victor Frankenstein. This is one of the most popular images, which is often referred to in the film: there were about 63 movies filmed about the monster in the period from 1909 to 2007. In fact, Victor Frankenstein is a curious scientist, whose curiosity has played a trick on him. His history is described in the novel Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley.

A young student, Victor Frankenstein, decides to try to defeat the death by reviving a dead body. He secretly collects pieces of unclaimed bodies, and even tries to select beautiful facial features. In the original, the monster was not carelessly sewn with colorful threads: the creator carefully picked the pieces of skin, trying to find the pieces of the same color.

The process of revival (lightning strike and a huge charge of electricity that ran the heart) is also wrong: Mary Shelley avoided any mention of the revitalization of the process. Researchers of the novel believe that it was not because of the author’s ignorance of the process, but in the text itself: the scientist attentively studied the works of famous alchemists: Albert the Great, Cornelius Agrippa, and Paracelsus. Apparently, Shelley implied that the creation of the monster contributed not to banal electricity, but to some alchemical processes.

The revived monster was not originally dull and obedient executor of his master’s orders. He had the cognitive mind and studied and understood everything very quickly in the world, knowing that people won’t stand beside him, assembled from the pieces of dead men. Even Victor admitted that he could not look at his creation, but could not kill him. So he ran away, not bothering to even give a name to his creation. But his masterpiece was not going to put up with this state of affairs: it rushes in pursuit of the student placing him responsible for its existence.

It is believed that the prototype for the mad creator was a German scientist and alchemist Johann Conrad Dippel, whose ancestral castle was named Frankenstein. He claimed that he had made an elixir of immortality from the blood and bones of animals. Also among his notes there was found information on the boiling of people’s parts to create an artificial being (homunculus) and attempts to move the soul from one body to another. From time to time, Johann Conrad added Frankenstein to his name that gave rise to suspect Shelley in using him as a prototype of her character.
