Women in Japan

Japan is heavily influenced by Confucian ideas, focusing on the family, where men are the heads of the household, and women depend on them. Such Confucian family ideals were shifted after World War II, thanks to the revision of several laws of Japanese Constitution in 1946. The change implemented new regulations of Japanese family relations. In 1947, the Civil Code of 1947 granted Japanese women all legal right, including:

  • Owning property;
  • Inheriting a family estate;
  • Marrying and divorcing freely;
  • Gaining parental rights.
  • Voting.

The revised Civil Code created equality between the sexes, but, despite legal equality, women were not equal in practice. Still, the Civil Code was a big step toward the changes. Before, women were dependent on their father, husband, and the eldest son. Now, a Japanese woman could be the head of the household.

Moving away from traditional roles opened for women and men new problems and that is why even “modern” families kept some of the traditional roles.

The following changes happened due to new shifts:

  • Both women and men can express intentions to marry. In Japan, marriage is a marker of adulthood;
  • The growing number of married Japanese women holds part-time and full-time jobs;
  • Since the household receives more income, men are less stressed compared to traditional households;
  • Both women and men feel more satisfied with shared income.

Now Japan faces a shortage of children due to the shifting roles of women, economic realities, and the reluctance of some men to share what used to be considered female tasks.

The current tendency shows that families prefer to have daughters rather than sons.

Japanese women had to make a long way to achieving the full equality that they have now. Today, family life involves a negotiation between a wife and a husband about household chores, childcare, chores, care for parents, and other aspects. The changes granted more freedom, but also new responsibilities and tasks. Today, in some Japanese families, women take care of the household, a child, and managed to earn more than their husbands. This causes various problems. Some women prefer to choose a traditional role. Still, the tendency clearly shows that women continue socializing more and more actively.

The role of women in Japanese society still keeps evolving. They have already achieved a dominant role in solving issues with the household, and the future perspective is that women start acquiring public power.
