The Naturalistic Purpose in Crane

The Open Boat is an interesting story written by Stephen Crane, and this is where he introduces men on the boat as the main representatives of human endurance in the indifferent universe against which they feel helpless. The main theme of this well-known book is naturalism, and its symbols are obvious throughout the plot. Basically, there are many aspects of naturalism used by the author. He includes the view of the nature that lacks in sentiments and seems bleakly realistic. The author claims that the main characters didn’t know about sky colors, lines, and so on.

Besides, there is an important emphasis on the world where God is entirely absent and distant. After rowing some ways, these men search for any life-saving station for them, but they don’t succeed. That’s why they start railing against the unreasoning and un-providential universe. The author also provides the audience with an interesting emphasis on men’s struggle to survive under such circumstances, and it seems almost animalistic because of its lack of choices. Crane offers different narratives that prove this stance.

Another detail is that the tone of the omniscient narrator of this book is quite detached. For example, when describing the shark that keeps circling around the boat with men, the narrator describes this setting in a unique and harsh manner. Readers should understand that Stephen Crane also uses different points of view when describing his characters and specific events included in this well-known book.

It’s obvious that these men are placed in quite extraordinary circumstances because they must learn to survive to stay alive. The correspondent didn’t expect to be in a small boat with other men on the cresting waves of the ocean without seeing any land. There are many naturalism elements described by the narrator, and they help readers understand the main purpose of the author. The writing style is a bit understated because the author writes in simple words when the accomplished sailor dies unexpectedly.

In addition, many people and critiques agree that there is some determinist in The Open Boat because there is only one death involved in its plot, the one of the oiler, no matter what other men do and the outcomes of their actions. The one thing that is clear for everyone is that naturalism plays a huge role in this book and it helps readers comprehend the power of the nature.
