The Prophet Zachariah

Why do the prophets come to people and what do they bring into the world? In the era of Israel and Judah kings, the important mission was conferred to a special group of people — the prophets of God. They were so-called Holy men, whom God at times raised up from the midst of Israel, to proclaim to the people His will, to warn against the sin and to testify about the mighty acts of His. A vivid example of the ancient prophet sent to the Jewish people during the hard times is the Prophet Zachariah.

In the VI century BC, the Jewish people suffered one of the most serious trials in its history. The Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II conquered the Kingdom of Judah and resettled thousands of Jews to Babylon. Decades later, the Jews returned to Jerusalem with their families. But throughout the years of the Babylonians invasion, all of Judea was almost deserted and lay in ruins. The despondency that had overtaken the Jews at the sight of the ravaged country was so great that they even stopped erecting the second Temple in gratitude to God for their wonderful return. Thus, God sends His people the Prophet Zachariah called to comfort and inspire them to restore their land.

Through the efforts of Zachariah, the Jewish people were encouraged to finish the construction of the Temple. But beyond that, Zachariah has left us a precious legacy — a book his prophetic visions and speeches, the purpose of which is to assure the Jewish people of the protection of God. By its content, the book of Zachariah can be divided into two parts: the first (chapters 1-6) are visions, the second (chapters 7-14) are speeches. There are eight visions delivered to the Prophet by God’s Angel. A distinctive feature of Zachariah’s book is the abundance of Messianic prophecies: for example, none of the prophets has met so many details about the last days of our Savior, as the Prophet Zachariah. The prophecies of Zachariah are educational and life-affirming. He gives the Jews hope that they will live happily and their oppressors will be defeated. Zachariah tells people that they will receive absolution. On predicting the unity of Church and state, he also warns them of the punishment that will befall them for spiritual corruption. Moreover, Zachariah predicts Christophany and the betrayal of Judas.

Having inspired the Jewish people and suggested them the mercy of God, The Prophet fulfilled his mission. But as soon as they forget about it and dissent the Dispensatio, God will again send a prophet to bring his people to the right path.
