McCabe and Mrs. Miller Essay

Interested in McCabe and Mrs. Miller? Basically, it’s a famous Western movie introduced to the audience in 1971 and directed by Robert Altman. Its screenplay was based on the well-known novel McCabe written by Edmund Naughton, but its director referred this film as the anti-Western one because it ignored a number of traditional conventions. What is this story all about?

Many people agree that McCabe and Mrs. Miller is a real visual masterpiece because its settings, sounds, costumes, lights, and colors create a truly unique atmosphere. For some of them, the main plot becomes secondary because of different visual effects, and this means that the choices made by its director were 100% correct. He wanted to create a perfect ambiance in this well-known movie and he achieved this goal.

Most of the colors and hues used in this movie are typical western, including dominant black and brown. However when other shades are used, they all are perfectly accentuated to bring people’s attention to the most important aspects of every scene involved. It’s impossible to deny that colors play a huge rule in this popular movie. Some scenes seem to be black and white, including the ones that involve characters being outside at night, but there is always some slight illumination that comes from flames or lamps, and it’s used to highlight different features and moods in the best way possible.

Besides, different locations and setting are important for this film and leaving an overall impression about the plot on the audience. The town seems to be gray, muddy, and dreary because it accentuates the dullness surrounding local inhabitants. It also has its monotone feel, and different settings created by the director only add to this feeling. For instance, snow near gray buildings is used to create the right sense of endless uniformity, just like town attitudes and its residents.

Finally, the naturalistic lighting of this movie is essential to provide viewers with the overall feeling of its plot. It seems that the director used only the natural light of sunrays and small lamps without any professional stage lights. This is what puts everyone into its setting and make every scene appear more realistic. The faces of all characters are also used to serve this important purpose and they are accentuates by some sparse light. Even in different dark settings, light recreates their mood, emotions, and true intensions.
