The Morals of Hunting

Hunting has always been one of the most important activities of humanity. In ancient times, people hunted to survive, get food, and used the skin of animals as warm clothes. Much later hunting became an elite occupation, and in the modern world it is mostly a sporting interest.

But not everything is so simple. There are a lot of protests from environmentalists, animal defenders, ecologists, and other different groups of people who are against hunting. Environmentalists believe that hunters violate natural selection, while advocates of animals say that every animal has a right to live.

If we take into account the fact that environmental ethics calls for recognition and high estimation of the intrinsic value of nature, respect if its rights and restriction of human rights, then many of the traditional forms of nature fall into the category of unethical. This applies especially to the amateur hunting. Amateur hunting is beneficial to man in terms of entertainment, but disadvantageous for animals and is morally unjustified ethically. It violates the right to life of animals, to be protected from pain caused by humans, and to dignity. It is unclear why one living being should be deprived of its life for the sake of empty entertainment.

Amateur hunting is not necessary for essential human needs. Camping, socializing with friends, and many other desires can be satisfied in other ways that do not require killing. The thirst for murder, no matter how disguised – a sport, tradition, art – is immoral in itself.

When a person kills, it is always bad. Sometimes, however, such involuntary actions can be justified morally, for example, self-defense or the purpose of obtaining food. But entertainment with the help of the murder what, in fact, is an amateur hunting is not a compelling moral reason to deprive a living life.

Opponents of amateur hunting consider wild animals to be subjects with intrinsic value, rights, useful primarily for themselves and existing primarily for themselves. In their view, the killing of an animal for the sake of empty entertainment (whether during a corrida, dog fighting or amateur hunting) is unacceptable and must be stopped as soon as possible (such unethical actions may also include catching wild birds with a purpose to hold them in cages and amateur fishing). Especially immoral is the amateur hunting and fishing in nature reserves and national parks, where the spirit of reverence for the wild life should prevail and the rights of wild animals should be respected as much as possible. According to opponents, killing of animals for fun amateur hunting should be considered more widely, in the general context of the fight for the rights of nature.
