Imhotep as the Wazir of Zoser

Imhotep was an outstanding architect of the ancient Egyptian period, Old Kingdom, the supreme dignitary of Zoser – the first pharaoh of the third dynasty. He was the builder of the pyramid of Zoser – the first of the Egyptian pyramids. Starting with the first transition he was regarded as a poet and thinker.

Imhotep was later deified and worshiped as a god of healing. Imhotep is considered the first versatile man known in the history of the world – he was an architect, an engineer, and a scientist, and also a physician.

Imhotep’s origins are largely unknown, but by judging the epigraphic data Imhotep is called the son of Kanofer, the chief of works of Upper and Lower Egypt; he was a native of priestly or bureaucratic genus.

Imhotep designed the first step pyramid at Saqqara near Memphis – a tomb of Zoser, and complex architectural structures surrounding the pyramid. Imhotep is considered the inventor of the pyramid of architectural form: he proposed to build over a stone Pharaoh’s mastaba (a rectangular tomb) three more mastaba of a smaller size, turning mastaba is a four-stage pyramid. Thus, Imhotep was the founder of the architectural tradition of the whole Old Kingdom, based on the use of pyramidal shapes in the design of royal tombs. In addition, there is reason to believe Imhotep was also the inventor of columns in architecture.

Imhotep outlived Zoser. On the north wall surrounding the complex of the unfinished pyramid of Zoser’s successor Sekhemkhet, Imhotep’s name is found, which makes possible his participation in the construction of this tomb as well. Usually, he is also considered the creator of the temple of Edfu.

Imhotep is also credited with the foundation of Egyptian medicine. In particular, he was considered the author of Edwin Smith Papyrus, a fundamental medical research, which, although is related to 1700-1550 B.C., is based on materials known to the Ancient or even the Early Kingdom. This papyrus for the first time determined the real causes of many diseases. In particular, the 48 traumatic cases, each with a description of the physical examination, treatment, and prognosis. A well-known Canadian medical practitioner of the 19th century, William Osler, called Imhotep the father of medicine and the first doctor, whose identity appeared from the mists of antiquity.

Imhotep is considered the author of the first literary teachings, known as The Teachings of Imhotep. Since this work has not survived to our time, the first known example of such literature is considered the Instruction of Ptahhotep, written on behalf of the vizier of Pharaoh Djedkare Isesi.
