Writing about Equality and Animals

Nowadays, some people keep arguing that they are all created equal because of the diversity in their skin colors, nations, and so on. Peter Singer is one of those writers who argue this statement. In his well-known book, Practical Ethics, he introduces a specific view called the principle of the equal consideration of people’s interests. It declares that the interests of all people must be declared equally, regardless of their backgrounds and social positions.

Besides, this author also points out that special considerations shouldn’t be given to any particular species, so this principle is not limited only to human beings. This interesting suggestion made by Peter Singer sparked many debates and resulted in many objections. For example, some people claim that they can eat animals because they eat each other in the wild nature. Another popular objection is that there are certain differences between animals and human beings.

People should look at the ethics and reciprocity views too. Some of them still believe that animals can’t feel pain, and they keep asking a few basic questions. Are they different from animals? Do they morals differ? These questions are hard to answer, and that’s why they raise many relevant debates about the equality of animals and humans. If to consider some action to be taken upon 2 individuals, and it affects one of them negatively, while barely affecting the other one, it makes sense to avoid it.

When it comes to the principle of equal consideration, all interests are weighed this way, so equal weight is given to different moral deliberations, such as the interests of those ones who are affected by specific actions. So, all interests must be considered, but the higher priority of greater weight is given to the one who is most affected by certain actions. When interests are weighed or considered, they have no names or other things that may differentiate them from the rest.

One of the greatest examples given by Peter Singer is how the Nazis were wrong in their horrible actions because they only thought about the members of their unique race, while the pain and suffering of other people didn’t matter to any of them. Under this interesting principle, everything doesn’t matter, except for interests. This author suggests that animals and people should be equal, and their interests should be considered and weighed equally according to his principle.
