William Shakespeare and Modern Literature

I’ve just finished reading a really worthy book dubbed “Juliet”, written by the American writer Anne Fortier. It turned extremely compelling, so literary every page had me gripped.

The major personage in the book is called Guilietta Tolomei or Julie Jacobs as we later discover. She lives in Virginia, the east coast of America. Having received the news that her aunt has died she immediately rushes home and gets herself involved into a quest of family secrets, danger and love. Julie happens to inherit a key to a safety deposit box in Siena, Italy. Her aunt has left a letter where she explains that the box will guide her to an old family treasure. The box discloses information regarding her ancestor Giulietta whose famous love for a young fellow Romeo generated despair for the medieval Siena. As Julie comes across descendants of the families of Shakespeare's legendary blood feud, she finds out that the curse “A plague on both of your houses” is still actual in today’s Siena and also learns that she appears to be the next target. Her parents died painfully in an attempt to break the curse between the two households. Moreover, it appears that only Romeo is capable of saving her from a tragic fate, though where’s he?

There have been lot of rumors that Shakespeare didn’t appear to be responsible for all of his great works and this particular book is fiction, though it suggests that Romeo and Juliet is set in Siena rather than the prominent Verona. Julie is undoubtedly a great lover of Shakespeare. She feels a special connection with his well-known play dubbed Romeo and Juliet. Throughout the novel it become clear that this girl turns to be a direct descendant of the original Juliet. The papers discovered by Julie suggest that the legendary tale of Romeo and Juliet dates further back from the Shakespeare version. Moreover, it alters many of the major facts. It feels like Shakespeare was very inspired by a realistic tragic love story. The given novel shows that the world in medieval times and these days isn’t so different. There’s still the idea that our families are capable of dictating who we are allowed to love. When Julie travels to Italy she doesn’t discover her family history, though she also falls in love, that could turn out to be deadly for this girl.

Just one element, which I really liked about the book, is that it smartly switches between the present day and that distant 1640 AD. The writer has adopted quite different styles of writing for the two periods. This approach suggests that the reader’s constantly on the edge of their seat.
