None Desires Bad Things

No one wants what is bad. It’s one of the most famous arguments introduced by Socrates in his unique works. What does it mean? In the Meno, he tried to explain that all people make certain life choices, and some of them can be harmful, but they don’t understand their final results at the very beginning. Is Socrates right or wrong? Can we willingly make the choices for bad things when we know that they will cause them a lot of harm?

Basically, Socrates says that it’s impossible, but many people disagree with him. Sometimes, they all make their bad choices if only they are available in specific situations. Bad things and choices always cause harm to those people who have them, and they all can be divided into 2 groups: those who want only good things, and individuals who desire the bad ones. People who want only good things make the decisions that will cause no harm to them, while others who want bad things believe them to be good.

This group of people can be further divided into 2 other groups. The first one thinks that bad things are good in the reality, including the king to gathers as much money as possible without any concert for his subjects. He just makes some bad choice and chooses bad things by his personal mistake. If the king knew the negative consequences on his actions, he wouldn’t make this choice, as no one wants something that forces to feel miserable. This decision causes the king to face the hatred of his subjects, even though he had no bad intention.

The other group of people believes that bad things are really bad, so they don’t make any mistake in their judgements. If to remember that no people want to cause any harm to themselves, then it’s easy to make a conclusion that the latter group simply doesn’t exist. Socrates believes that no people really want something that is bad, makes them feel miserable, and causes some harm. His statement is practically true, and in theory there exists one group of people who can do that.

In conclusion, Socrates is one of the most famous ancient historical figures whose written works are still researched and studies by many people these days. Some of them agree with his idea that no one wants bad things, while others disagree and make their own conclusions. This idea is different for each person, but it should be well-argued and considered. Do you known any person who chooses bad things in the reality? If yes, try to oppose the claim made by Socrates.
