The Narrative Structure and Style of the Tell-Tale Heart

The Tell-Tale Heart is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. It was published in 1843 and considered a classic of the Gothic fiction genre. Poe, an outstanding writer of short stories, created a masterful tale of psychological horror. The Tell-Tale Heart is really one of the best of his works. One of the aspects that made this tale so popular is its narrative structure and style.

The tale is told in the first person. The confessed murderer of an old man tells his story, and as it progresses, the readers can quickly understand that everything may not be that obvious as it seems at the beginning. The murder is carefully calculated, and the murderer dismembers the body and hides it under the floorboards. The unnamed narrator tries to convince the readers of his sanity while telling about the murder he committed. From the very first word, it is clear that the voice telling the story is unusual, characterized by starts and stops, direct addresses to the audience, and an exaggerated style. The emotionally charged narrative hints to the readers that the version of events offered by the narrator may not be reliable.

From the beginning, it is understood that main events like the murder of the old man and his dismemberment have already taken place. While the readers are caught up in the horrific story, the narrator’s focus seems to be different, and the structure and pace of the narrative reflect that focus. While story’s narrator tries to convince his listener of his sanity, level-headedness as well as the reasonableness of his actions, he circles around the main event, emphasizing mostly how it happened.

Since the story is mostly about the narrator’s emotional state, the murder of the old man is not the most important moment in this story. The murder itself is only mentioned by the narrator in one sentence. The real climax of the tale occurs when the narrator almost panics, perceiving the old man’ heart beating under the floorboards (possible hallucination). This makes him confess.

The narrative style of the story, like the narrative structure, reflects the nervous, disordered state of the narrator’s mind. The narrator asks his listener: “Why will you say that I am mad?” Stylistically, the heavy use of exclamation points, repeated questions, dashes, and assertions of his own sanity are used to heighten the emotional impact on the readers, forcing them to understand the narrator’s troubled mind.
