Andy’s Imprisonment in Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption is a prison drama, the film adaptation (1994) of Stephen King’s novel Rita Hayworth and the Salvation of Redemption. The film is dedicated to the history of the banker Andy Dufresne sentenced for murdering his wife and her lover to serve his sentences in Shawshank State Prison in Maine.

Despite the small box office and the fact that at first the movie was not very popular, for 15 years after its release, it has won the love of the audience.

In 1947, the banker Andy Dufresne on the basis of compelling circumstantial evidence was sentenced to two life terms for murdering his wife and her lover. He is sent to a correctional institution Shawshank managed by the prison director Samuel Norton. Andy manages to make friends with other prisoners, including a black Red, who also serves a life sentence. Red has spent many years in prison and is engaged in smuggling (with the exception of weapons and drugs). Through him, Andy gets a rock hammer, with which he makes the stone chess. Later, Red gives him a large poster of Rita Hayworth, and then the posters of Marilyn Monroe and Raquel Welch.

Once Dufresne hears how the security chief, Byron Hadley, complains to his colleagues about taxes he would have to pay to the estate. Andy explains to him how it is possible to bypass requisitions via holes in the legislation. Soon everybody finds out about the accounting talents of Andy. And not only guards in Shawshank Redemption, but also in neighboring prisons. They come to Andy to get consultations on tax issues. Andy is transferred to the post of assistant to the aged librarian Brooks Hatley, so that he could devote himself entirely to a financial work.

The warden Norton comes up with a plan to use prisoners for public works. For the possibility to use cheap labor of prisoners instead of the skilled workers he gets kickbacks. In exchange for the work in the library and a personal cell Andy helps Norton launder the money under the guise of a fictional Randall Stevens.

In 1965, a young robber Tommy Williams comes to the prison. He manages to make friends with Red and Andy, who helps Tommy to receive matriculation. Having learned about the case of Andy, Tommy recalls his cellmate, Elmo Blatche, who told him that he had made the same crime. With Tommy’s help Dufresne could prove his innocence, but the warden Norton refuses to help him, fearing that free Andy would expose his machinations. After a fierce dispute Norton sends Andy to a cell and orders a security chief to kill Tommy for an attempt of escape. The next morning Andy escapes.
