Struggle for the California Condor

California condor is one of the largest birds in the world that belongs to the species of American vultures. The wingspan is about 3 m, and the length of the body is up to 120 cm. Condor lives in the mountainous area along the coast of California. Indians called them the thunder birds.

Despite the frightening dimensions, California condor is a calm bird. Its paws are weak and the back finger is little, so it will be impossible for it to carry a human in its claws, despite what Jules Verne said in his novel.

An interesting feature of the bird is a developed sense of smell, which other birds don’t have.

The plumage of the Condor is black with white feathers. The neck is naked, covered with a red or yellow skin.

Condors build their nests on rocks, but they hunt on plains and in the deserts. They eat carrion, but sometimes can attack sick and weakened animals. These birds feel death and fly unerringly to the places where animal is supposed to die.

The population of condors is under a threat of extinction. The features of their reproduction play not the least role in that. Young condors become able to breed only at the age of 6. Females lay eggs one time in 2 years. The breed of condors is very small. One clutch has no more than 2 eggs.

In the middle of the 20th century, the population of California condors declined sharply. Despite the fact that the main nesting sites for condors are reserves, the population of this species has been steadily decreasing. In 1987, scientists found only 24 condors living in the wild. This bird is listed in the International Red Book. Like most other large predators, California condors were unable to adapt to the concern near the nests and the disappearance of large ungulates.

The extinction of the condor is due to poisoned baits used against wolves and coyotes, and because of the pesticides that disrupt the normal development of an egg shell.

Specialists said that if no actions would immediately be taken, the California condor will completely disappear. Therefore, the eggs from one of the last remaining nests were removed. In San Diego Zoo, the eggs were used to breed chicks. Since 1992, the zoo has been successfully returning these birds into the wild nature.

When the birds are released, they, hopefully, will continue to breed and save the species, and their population will grow gradually. Perhaps California condor will again soar in the sky over America. In total, around 30 California condors live in captivity in the world today.
