It’s difficult to argue that natural night vision is an important ability. Basically, night vision is the ability is something that all people would want to enjoy. Who would refuse from a possibility to see everything at night without using all kinds of fancy tools, such as night-vision googles? Unfortunately, human beings don’t have their ability to clearly see objects at night because they become colorblind. The main reason is that our eyes tend to switch from our standard daytime vision to the so-called color-intensive rod system.
Unlike people, many other animals have this kind of helpful ability to see in the darkness. This is what creates a great subject for many studies and detailed research as scientists are eager to learn more about its basic causes. Besides, they want to get more data about different methods that lie behind natural night vision and specific limitation that it may have, especially in terms of humans. A group of such scientists interested in this subject includes such talented people as Warrant, Kelber, and Balkenius who managed to study the natural night vision of nocturnal hawkmoths called Deilephila elpenor.
Their basic purpose was determining whether hawkmoths can really see different colors at night, or whether they just use other available tools to define the right type of flowers to feed. All people can’t see or differentiate colors at night so that it’s quite hard for them to find the necessary objects by using only their natural vision. They need to use special methods and extra tools to achieve this goal, including other senses, such as their taste and smell when looking for food. Besides, people can rely on their colorless vision to choose the necessary items according to their shapes.
The above-mentioned scientists performed a number of important experiments to prove that hawkmoths use their natural color night vision, not other senses, unlike human beings. They trained Deilephila elpenor moths to associated sugar with its color, yellow and blue, by feeding from special colored artificial flowers during the day time. This is how these scientists managed to prove that their theory was right. In conclusion, people must admit that they have a limited field of vision, especially when it comes to its natural night type. Their ability to see in the back of their heads is also limited, unlike insects and other members of the wildlife.
