Chang Yu-i’s Struggle with Identity

Pang-Mei Natasha Chang in her dual memoir of her and her great-aunt’s lives, Bound Feet & Western Dress, tells the story of her great-aunt, Chang Yu-i, growing up in a changing world. Even though Chang Yu-I was born and brought up in the early 1900s, she still faces a lot of conflicts trying to find her identity.

Identity is a significant, permanent ‘I’ of a human, as well as internal and subjective concept of oneself as an individual. Identity is the sense of identity, one’s own truth, complicity to the world and other people.

Identity is acquired over time and it is a source of identification with the other person, i.e., identity doesn’t initially have a subjective character, therefore, identity not only requires the recognition of others; it simply cannot happen without the other person.

The crisis of identity usually happens during the period of adolescence, although it is not restricted to only this period in life. Identity usually occupies the fifth stage in life cycle, although it can also overlap with stages before and after it. Some important circumstances can change the result of this stage. Throughout identity process a person is trying to fins oneself by bringing together parts of life and combining them to create an individual they want to be. External factors, such as family or community, tend to play an indirect, but essential role in forming an identity. This is true for any culture, although family plays an even more important role in a collectivist culture, such as Yu-i lives in.

Chang Yu-i is brought up in the family of twelve children in a little county in China. Chang was born during the changing times for her country, which makes her struggle for finding her identity even harder and more confusing. This was the time when China had to make a choice whether to stick to old traditions or adopt new waves of the western world. Through the whole 1900’s China was in a political disorder. The country had to deal with many events, like the Boxer Rebellion and the Manchu dynasty.

Chang’s parents tell her that at 15 she will marry Hsu Chi-mo. But Yu-i doesn’t want to get married yet and instead wants to continue getting education at the Academy. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have a choice and can’t influence her parents’ decision. She is pulled from her studies before she could finish them. Neither her parents, nor her in-laws think education is important for a woman. This is not something Yu-i agrees with; this is something she has to accept as part of who she is.
