The word ambition has always had rather a positive connotation to me. Moreover, I don’t think that ambition suggests competing with other people. Perhaps, sometimes you find yourself in situations when competition can’t be avoided. However, speaking more generally I’m assured that ambition is solely individual and it’s not necessary connected with completion, unless you’re going to compete with yourself.
By this I mean, for instance, an attempt of yours to become better than you are currently or to have something you don't own at the moment, which, from my point of view involves a sort of competition with yourself. As for me, I don't see ambition as the desire to be better or boast more money, success or anything else than others.
I consider myself to be an ambitious person, yet I don't perceive the world as a battlefield and other humans as rivals. You waste a great deal of precious time if all the time you’re looking at what other people are, do or have. It’s clear that this time would be better utilized if you spent it simply paying attention to yourself.
Besides this, I have a positive attitude to individualism, and I don't associate it with rising above others. From my point of view egocentrism and selfishness aren’t necessarily found in individualism. Individualism might certainly make you a more valuable and useful individual within your community, as it could be a sort of a side effect.
However, I believe that ambition goes hand in hand with discipline and work. You can’t do without them if you really want ambition to bring positive good results to your life.
Moreover, I’m sure that ambition is more than just another acceptable thing. I think that ambition can take a wide array of forms, even when it’s often seen as the strong desire to possess things or to be well-known in some way. In my opinion, ambition happens to be a sine-qua-non in life. It makes folks plan and set objectives goals for themselves. It makes people think, thoroughly analyze and try different ways of doing things.
Now, let’s enumerate obvious advantages of ambition:
