The Great Migration Essay

In the very beginning of the 20th century, many African-Americans decided to leave southern regions of the US and migrate to northern states. Basically, they had great hopes to start a new life, which would be different from the one dictated by racism and other negative aspects, including violence and hatred based on their skin color. These people had dreams about new opportunities, including political participation, freedom, integration, and much more.

However, African-Americans met the resistance of Northern middle-class black and white people who didn’t want to accept them because they were afraid that this black mass would change their urban landscape considerably. For example, one of the most evident results on their influx into northern urban areas was the eruption of violence, such as race riots in Chicago that tore this city apart. There were many deadlines that proclaimed disdain, horror, and other feelings that made the response of white people to arriving African-American evident.

The growing tension in such regions suggested that white people needed to be engaged in different efforts to control migrants who wanted to move into northern states. However, they were also involved in violence against such people caused by such negative feelings as insecurity and fears. Many migrants relocated to Chicago, and this city was the center of the fears and violence of other citizens.

The worst part is that African-Americans didn’t receive the benefits that they expected when arriving in Chicago and other northern cities, but they still managed to get some sense of pride and dignity while settling in urban areas. They were faced with multiple obstacles and problems that might prevent many of them from gaining their full access to the benefits received by white people. For example, Illinois had certain issues with desegregation so that African-Americans had to fight for their rights and against different segregation forms that were clearly evident in city housing.

Finally, most migrants were highly concentrated in distinct ghettos, this being subjected to high mortality and illness rates, crime ratings, lack of house repairs, inadequate recreational facilities, garbage, dirty streets, brutality, mistreatment, overcrowded schools, and other similar difficulties. This means that their Great Migration wasn’t as successful as they planned at the very beginning.
