The Tragic End of Wang

After reading The Good Earth, a wonderful novel written by Pearl Buck, you’ll find out more about the tragic end of Wang Lung. Basically, he was raised be a generation of poor farmers who managed to become a wealthy and respected house. One dramatic change in a social status forced Wang Lung’s sons develop different values and views from a father. Besides, his different treatment of each of them is also responsible for shaping their characters.

While being a part of the same family, all characters demonstrate major differences in important values. For instance, their father values the land, a middle son chooses wealth and a minor son likes popularity, while the other one is focused on respect. Wang Lung values the land because of his personal impoverished upbringing. He is even obsessed with the land, and this is what results in his neglect of his entire family. His youngest son gets no attention from him and his plans to force him work on the land makes him feel just like a peasant. That’s why this son decides to prove his father that he can be as great as other brothers, so he leaves his family to join the army.

The middle son keep watching his inheritance passing from his father to his older brother, so he always complaints that his personal share is too small. He does everything possible to save the money of his family, while the older son get more attention and is give more than others so that he only wants to be respected by others. Wang Lung is proud of the first son and he gives him much more than others.

At the very beginning of this well-known novel, Wang Lung is respected and wealthy man, but everything changes for him in the end. In summary, the story of his life serves as a great study or example of traditional values. This man is truly devoted to traditional respectful values of China, and that’s why he always shows his obedience and utter respect to older generations, even when his lazy and greedy uncle keeps abusing this system.

It’s worth saying that the sense of superiority towards Chinese is quite common among traditional families, like the one described in this interesting novel written by Pearl Buck. Wang Lung also believes in the authority of men over all women and other stereotypical values. Although he doesn’t show that in any strong or inferior manner, this male character still displays this kind of attitude throughout the plot, and it can be noticed in many scenes.
