Tess of D'Urberville as a Naturalistic Novel

When it comes to naturalism, it’s always based on people’s belief that everything real should come from the nature. Another important idea is that human beings can behave as if they all were animals that respond to their environment without any understanding or control of specific situations. After considering this definition of naturalism, it becomes clear that Tess of D'Urberville is a 100% naturalistic novel written by Thomas Hardy.

Basically, naturalism is focused on the right progression from organisms to the environment, adaptation, struggle, survival, extinction, fertility, resistance, and so on. At the very beginning of this well-known novel, readers perceive that Tess is just like a mere organism because he keeps living her daily life with only a few complications. We all know that life is not ideal, and it becomes evident to the character of Tess after killing their family horse. When their livelihood is in danger, she feels that she needs to do something to fix them, or her whole family won’t be able to survive.

Besides, Tess must learn to adapt to new settings, and she is also convinced by her mother to visit the mansion of D’Urberville to ask for a job to support her relatives. Here, this female character adapts in a few basic ways: one is her living style because Tess needs to learn to take care of hens, and the other one is transforming from a child to an adult as Alec sets her into womanhood too early.

It’s clear that Tess needs to do everything possible to survive in this life. For example, she had to take care of herself and a bastard baby. When her child dies, she decided to work at a dairy farm. At this stage, things seem to get better for her until she is faced with major problems once again. That’s because she meets Alec and needs to show some resistance to him, but Tess fails to do that. The final progression of this realistic novel is connected with Alec’s murder because she kills him in her act of rage.

In the end of this traffic story, Tess and Angel run from local authorities, but then she is given to the police to be executed in a sacrificial way. In this well-known book, tragedies take shapes of different events and influence the main characters in many ways, but they all are described in a naturalistic manner by the author. Finally, Tess is an innocent girl who keeps making wrong decisions in her life that finally bring her to destruction.

When it comes to naturalism, it’s always based on people’s belief that everything real should come from the nature. Another important idea is that human beings can behave as if they all were animals that respond to their environment without any understanding or control of specific situations.
