Reagan Administration's Foreign Policy in Latin America

When studying the foreign policy of Reagan’s administration in Latin America, students should understand that it involves the period from 1981 to 1989. Its basic goal was stopping and winning the Cold War and rolling back of communism, and it was achieved in many regions. The policy of this American president was characterized by the strategy called peace through strength.

The Reagan Doctrine is a well-known part of his foreign policies because the US offered the necessary logistics and financial support in Latin America to help the anti-communist opposition. Through his presidential terms, Ronald Reagan supported the anti-communist ideas and regimes in such countries as El Salvador and Guatemala in addition to the democratic power transitions of Bolivia and some other Latin American countries.

Many people and historians agree that Reagan’s support of contras in Nicaragua is quite controversial because of bad human rights records of rebels. Besides, his support of the new anti-communist governments in El Salvador and Guatemala was quite controversial because of their repressive nature and the events that were later called genocide in Guatemala.

In terms of Falklands War in 1982, his presidential administration was faced with a number of competing obligations to both parties involved in this conflict. Reagan decided to support the British government in this political conflict. His administration also sent its military, logistical, and financial support to contras in Nicaragua, and it was funneled via the CIA to rebels. The main problem is that the tactics used by contras were well-known for their brutality.

If to consider his foreign policies in El Salvador, this country was torn by the civil war, and the US decided to support the military government. Its security forces were divided between right-wing extremists and reformists, and they used death squads to stop unwanted economic and politic changes. It’s worth noting that Reagan’s policies in this region were often criticized because of endless human rights abused. For example, many people were tortured, killed, and gone nowhere. This means that the political course chosen by his presidential administration in general was quite controversial and it’s still researched and debated by many historians worldwide because of its pros and cons.
