The events of the novel Brave New World take place in a fictional dystopia of a world state. It is 632 year era of stability, a period of Ford. Ford, who created the largest automobile company in the world in the early 20th century, revered in the world state as the Lord God. He is called Our Lord Ford. The state is ruled by technocrats. People are not born, but fertilized ova, synthetically grown in special incubators. People are grown in different conditions, so they become completely different individuals – alphas, betas, gammas, deltas, and epsilons. Alphas are people of the first class, knowledgeable workers; epsilons are people of the lower groups that are able only to do the monotonic physical work. When the embryos are created they are being kept in special conditions and after they appear out of glass bottles. The babies are educated differently. Each caste has reverence for a higher caste and contempt for the lower castes. Each caste has costumes of a certain color. For example, alphas walk in gray suits, gammas walk in green suits, and epsilons wear black suits.
A special place in the novel is devoted to the issues of cloning. The novel explicitly describes the fruits of people created by specified parameters. The genetic manipulation of embryos allowed transgressing from a simple and slavish imitation of nature into a much more fascinating world of human ingenuity, where the power predetermines, adapts, and prepares people to live in specified castes, and at the same time instills love to their inevitable social fate chosen by the powers.
In the dystopia the author talks about a technological revolution associated with the cultivation of people not in the womb, but in incubators with the modification of behavior, the introduction of artificial hormones, etc. Huxley was trying to look into the future, which a totalitarian state prepares for us. The utopian idea about a bright future and the greatness of the ruling people find their critical thinking.
The very nature of the human is important as a source of values. Its violations or modifications can lead to the deepest evil. Huxley managed to see the future development of biotechnology ideas and warn humanity about its consequences.
The most incredible in this book is that on the date of its publication (in 1932) Huxley already foresaw cloning, in vitro children, totalitarianism, materialistic globalization, new fascism with its artificial and compulsory happiness, and soft-ideology. Today, genetic manipulation, cloning of sheep and cows, artificial insemination, and the sequence of bases in DNA, have become a reality, and we know that the era posthumanity is coming.
