The expansion of democracy during the Jacksonian era

Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the USA. During his presidency from 1829 to 1837, there were many democratic changes and his influence on American democracy cannot be overrated. The era he created well-known as “Age of Jacksonian democracy” lasted from about 1824 until the Civil War. Jacksonian Democracy brought in two party system and changed the rules in business and banking. Jackson is the man who founded Democratic Party. Jackson believed that the government ought to provide common people with the protection from wealthy elites. However, Democrats also thought that business and industry are still exceptionally important. The opponents of Democrats were the Whig party. The Whig party were well-known as wealthy elite. Their main idea was the strong federal government. Actually, the Democrats and the Whigs were not antagonists. Demonstrating commitment to a peaceful constitutional rivalry, they approved the principle of “gag” (the gag rule); its main idea is the prohibition of discussion of the main explosive issues - slavery. Now we can say that Jacksonian Democracy was based on the following basic principles: -Expended suffrage. Before the war of 1812 only white landowners could vote. Jackson and his followers believed that all white males should get voting rights. This also helped him to increase the numbers in his party. However African Americans and women still could not vote. - Strict constructionism. Jacksonians thought that the power of federal government should be limited. Jackson said that he would guard against "all encroachments upon the legitimate sphere of State sovereignty." -Banking and business. Jackson believed in the laissez-faire concept. He thought that the government should just stay out of business. Jackson was opposed government-granted monopolies to banks. He believed that a national bank is only existed to cheat common people and to serve the wishes of wealthy elite. His main thought about this was that only gold and silver should be money. -Manifest destiny. As we know the term “Manifest Destiny” wasn’t used during Jackson’s presidency but it is often mentioned with the Jacksonian era. People who supported Manifest Destiny thought that it was America's destiny to extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. Manifest Destiny was a real disaster to Native Americans. - Patronage. Patronage was the policy of promotion and hiring political supporters into offices.
