Tv And Child Behavor: your number one parent concern

Frankly speaking television isn’t so bad as it seems to be. It really boasts its good side. For instance, it can be educational and entertaining. It can open up new worlds for children, providing them with a chance to travel around the globe. They can learn more about different cultures and enjoy ideas they might never encounter in their own community. Shows with a pro-social message can really ave a positive impact on kids' behavior. Then, TV programs with positive role models can influence kids, making upbeat lifestyle changes. However, the reverse can be true, as children are likely to learn things from television, which parents don't want them to learn. Television can affect children’s health, behavior as well as family life in negative ways. It's worthwhile for many parents to think about what role they want television to play in their family.

  • A great deal is known about kids and TV, as there have been thousands of researches on the subject. Researchers have explored how TV affects children’s sleep, grades, weight, behavior, and so on. It’s worth looking at what the research states when deciding how to manage TV in your family.
  • Unfortunately, spending time watching television can take precious time away from healthy activities, such as playing outdoors with pals, going for a walk with family members and so on. TV addiction can’t get along with participating in sports, art, music as well as other activities, which require practice to become skillful.
  • TV viewing actually starts much earlier than other forms of media or to be exact - before age two. In recent years, television and DVD programs geared to toddlers and babies have come on the market, so currently there’re even cable channels for babies. We don't know for sure yet what effect TV-viewing by babies might have on their development. However, we know that time spent watching television could be spent on interacting with caregivers as well as other kids. Social interaction turns to be critical to a baby's healthy development.

Let’s assess TV’s presence in kids' lives:

  • TV viewing among children is at an eight-year high. Well, on average, kids, aged 2-5 are used to spending 32 hours a week in front of a TV, watching DVDs, TV programs or using a game console. As for children aged 6-11, they spend up to 28 hours a week, watching mostly live TV.
  • Up to 71% of 8- to 18-year-olds feature a TV in their bedroom,54% own a DVD/VCR player, 37% have cable/satellite TV, while 20% use premium channels.
