Willy Loman in The Death of a Salesman

When it comes to Willy Loman, he is often called a tragic hero in The Death of a Salesman, an interesting story written by Arthur Miller. Basically, he is a middle-class salesman who starts understanding that he failed to fulfill his American Dream, despite long years of efforts. His relentless and naïve pursuit of personal success affect his sense of worthiness and dominate his marital life with Linda and 2 sons, Happy and Biff. In the plot, this character realizes that the true wealth of people lies in being respected and loved by their families. That’s why Willy decides to make one final attempt to provide a future for his sins and secure his personal dignity. He commits a suicide because of the benefits guaranteed by his life insurance.

For the author and many readers, Loman is a classic tragic hero. He is just an ordinary man whose personal life expectations and dreams were not fulfilled because of the false values of the society. Unlike the heroes of many famous classic tragedies, Willy has no noble purposes, but he has pity and respect, and this is what provides him with an important heroic quality. This character is definitely flaws in many ways, but his downfall is ensured by social forces.

Willy is on the wrong life track because he thinks that being a good salesman is something impressive. He is also obsessed with impression because they are all the falsity of his dreams. For instance, Loman he dislikes his sons to use rude words and whistle, and he also lies to Charley that he got a job when he decides to fire Howard. Charley offers Willy a good job, but he declines this offer because of his thoughts that he needs to have an impressive image of being a popular and perfect salesman.

In this book, Arthur Miller is focused not only on the matter of pursuing the America Dream, but he is also concerned with the idea of this dream itself. For Willy Loman, there are certain images of personal success that he keeps in his mind, including his talented and wealthy brother Ben and Dave Singleman, a salesman hero. However, readers need to understand that the character of Ben seems quite fantastic, while the achievements of Dave are very exaggerated and idealized by Willy. That’s why he fails to achieve any success by using them as his ideals. His ongoing efforts of make his dreams come true fail, but it makes them a stronger and better personality who devotes his life to a family.
