The Life and Contributions of Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei is a famous Italian astronomer who provided the mankind with many scientific insights that laid the main foundation for future scientists. Basically, his investigations of motion laws and improvements of the telescope allowed him to give a better understanding of the universe and this world. He questioned people’s beliefs of his time that everything revolved around the Earth. Galileo was the first one who discovered the first 4 moons of Jupiter too.

According to Aristotle, heavier objects tend to fall faster compared to the lighter one, but Galileo wasn’t sure in that. That’s why he experimented with balls of varying weights and sizes, and his studies resulted in different inclinations. They revealed that all balls had the same acceleration, regardless of their mass, and travel along a parabola. Galileo also worked with pendulums because accurate timekeeping was non-existent at that time. He observed that the steady motion of pendulums could solve this problem, and he defined that the time it took for pendulums to swing back and forth didn’t depend on the arc of their swings. Before his death, Galilei invented the 1st pendulum clock, and it was a great contribution.

This talented astronomer and scientist is often credited with the telescope creation, but it wasn’t so in reality because he only contributed to improving it. He was the first one who found out about the existence of the spyglass and started experimenting with telescope designs. This improved model of telescope allowed Galileo to see with the magnification of 8-9 times. Besides, he was the one who saw moon craters, sunspots, and so on. He was puzzled with the rings of Saturn too.

In his lifetime, all existing celestial bodies were considered to orbit the Earth, and opposite ideas were declared heresy. Galilei didn’t agree with that and he researched this subject to support the system offered by Copernic. That’s why he was summoned to Rome where he was warned to stop teaching about his controversial theories and thoughts. However, in 1632, Galileo published his work on the system offered by Copernic because he believed that he was allowed to at least write about this subject while treating it just as some mathematic proposition. Unfortunately, Galileo was accused in heresy and found guilty by being placed under his house arrest for the rest of his life.
