Visual Perception and Visual Imagery

A person receives information about certain visual characteristics of a subject through visual perception. A whole, final image of the object develops through perception of the totality of its properties — everything there is to perceive. It involves a sum of various sensations, including past experiences of the person projecting in forms of ideas and knowledge. The physiological basis of perception combines a number of things. Among them, the key ones are the primary analysis that originates in the receptors, and further analytical and synthetical activities of one’s brain. As a result of such a combination of effort, sense organs form a so-called perceptual image that is as close to the objective reality as it possibly can be.

The distinction of the object begins with its contours. One’s eyes together with one’s brain determine the object and its background. These concepts are quite dynamic, and at a certain stage of perception one can easily become another.

Lack of knowledge about the subject along with the absence of a critical assessment of it will inevitably lead to errors in visual perception. For example, one’s color perception may be erroneous due to visual illusions, which have a variety of reasons to be depending on physiological characteristics of the analyzer, his or her mental characteristics, life experiences, desired results (apperception), etc. The environment can also become a source of optical illusions, causing the contrast ratio of the subject and the background shift. Illusions regarding the colors are the result of a number of phenomena pertaining to the optical, visual, and physiological phenomena. Thus, reflections and refractions of light produce glares and shadows.

Yet, even though visual perception and visual imagery are similar terms, they for sure are not interchangeable. Visual imagery is usually referred to as to one’s mental capacity to reproduce his or her visual perception experiences without actually getting to experience them at the model. It is often used as a special technique during therapy sessions aiming to help a patient to concentrate on a certain moment or emotion that he or she experienced during the past. Visual imagery, however, goes far beyond the required perception, resulting in people being able to visually recreate things in their heads that they might not have ever seen or experienced in real life.
