Analyzing All Quiet on the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western Front is a famous war novel written by Erich Maria Remarque, and it reveals the devastating and horrible effects of war on people. Unlike other novels that present the heroic and glorifying aspects of wars, the author decided to show how very young and innocent soldiers became the main victims of horrible events. Besides, Remarque was against the negative role of patriotism, authority, and nationalism that placed a lot of pressure on the decisions made by youngsters about taking part in WWI.

Through the main characters, such as Paul Bummer, the narration presented to readers introduces them to the effects of any war on people as they are faced with its negative experiences. They are responsible for the transformation of soldiers into some awful animals because their human values are destroyed by the war. In this well-known novel, soldiers are faced with the constant danger of dying and different unbearable conditions that provoke the key characteristics of survival.

The author describes the harsh state in which they must live during wars. From the very beginning, Remarque demonstrates war effects on personal reactions toward the deaths of close people. For example, readers should focus on the scene about the boots of Kammerich because when he is dead, his good friends seem to be more worried about owning his boots instead the fact of his death. During wars, this kind of behavior becomes acceptable because all soldiers get used to the deaths of other people and they need to think about their own survival.

Some of them can become the victims of nervous breakdowns, and that’s why soldiers do their best to escape different emotions and feelings, so they become self-centered on their survival. In addition, the author shows young soldiers and their transformation by representing their generation as the character called Paul. He appears to be one of the cleverest and emotionally stable individuals in this novel, but he still can’t escape struggles with connecting to the normal living conditions.

This story is about how wars affect people’s lives and characters in many ways. Soldiers get used to watching others dying, and these tragic memories will never go away out of their minds. This means that all people have to pay a high price for fighting in wars, including the hidden ones, just like Paul who came into WWI as a young and kind boy.
