Jeffersonian vs. Jacksonian Democracy

When it comes to Jackson and Jefferson, they were two powerful and important politicians in 2 completely different acts. Basically, each of them formed his own democracy form, and they all helped other shape the way everyone thinks about the modern US government. When studying this subject, you need to understand that both democracies have their own similarities and differences. To get a better idea of them, it’s necessary to analyze their social, political, religious, financial, and other aspects.

First, you should compare their democracies in such basic areas as economics and politics. Keep in mind that those conditions under which people were eligible for office holdings were similar. Pay attention to Jeffersonian democracy because all eligible people were quite average instead of wealthy. Jackson also declared that intelligent and average citizens were qualified to serve if they wanted. The main difference is that he started the so-called spoils system where all long-term office holders were removed.

Another important difference is in the ways used to choose presidential candidates. Jefferson stated that 2 highest voted candidates were a vice-president and a president, while Jackson claims that each candidate had to be chosen by nominating conventions so that both officials needed to run their offices separately. Don’t forget that an attitude towards a national bank of both famous politicians were similar. For example, Jefferson encourages all state banks and opposed it, just like Jackson and followers who also opposed this bank. These basic facts can help you make a conclusion that their economic and political conditions were both similar and different, but they all were democratic.

The next step that should be taken is considering the religious and social aspects of the democracies settled by both politicians. When dealing with minorities, such as women and slaves, their opinions were quite similar too. Jefferson was the one who doubted that the savagery of Indians and white civilization could coexist, despite his claims that all people were born to be free. Take into account that this man also had many slaves and considered that all women had only one important life goal, getting married and taking care of their spouses. Finally, Jackson had similar opinions on these important subjects, but he launched many positive reforms.
